Hi, my name is Ian. I'm a sociologist who studies how people and institutions navigate uncertainty: how it’s managed, operationalized, and sometimes even made useful. Currently, I’m turning my dissertation on multiracial identity into a book, expanding a research project on astrology as a social phenomenon, and beginning a new project on American digital nomads in Italy

In addition to research, I am a dedicated teacher with thousands of hours of experience as the instructor of record at research universities, private liberal arts colleges, and city colleges. For several years, I led a research and mentorship group that supported the growth of diverse students seeking to strengthen their research skills. I am deeply proud of that work and of the community we built together.
